Edition No. 1
This edition was issued on 5 March 2021
Welcome
Welcome to the first edition of Personal Injury Commission News, my new regular publication that replaces Towards the PIC.
The Commission is successfully open, and we are nearing the end of our first week in operation as the new tribunal. I’m grateful to all of the staff who worked extremely hard to prepare for commencement of the Commission and our stakeholders who have supported us in the journey toward it.
This edition provides an update on the Commission’s inaugural sitting, reminders about our contact details and legal instruments, plus notification of a recent order authorising the use of the Commission’s electronic case management systems.
I’m committed to ensuring the transition to the Commission’s new operations proceeds as smoothly as possible for everyone. Thank you in advance for your patience as we fine-tune the Commission’s processes and our new ways of interacting.
I will be in touch with another edition of Personal Injury Commission News soon.
Sincerely
Judge Gerard Phillips
We’re Open! How we Marked the Occasion
I presided over a Ceremonial Sitting of the Commission at the District Court on Monday 1 March, the first day of our operations. The Sitting included addresses from the Hon. Mark Speakman SC MP, Attorney General and Minister for the Prevention of Domestic Violence, the Hon. Victor Dominello MP, Minister for Customer Service and the Presidents of the NSW Bar Association, Mr Michael McHugh SC and the Law Society of NSW, Ms Juliana Warner. I was pleased to be able to celebrate the opening of the Commission in this way.
If you didn’t have the opportunity to watch the live stream of the event, I’d encourage you to watch the recording here, as the speeches delivered provide excellent context around how the Commission came about and the expectations we have for the future.
How to Contact Us
In establishing the Commission, one of my focus areas was ensuring I put ‘front of house’ arrangements in place that deliver on the Personal Injury Commission Act 2020 objects and to create an easily accessible ‘one-stop’ shop for the injured people of NSW.
To that end, the Commission launched its brand-new website on Monday, along with a single telephone number and enquiry email address.
Here’s how to contact us moving forward:
Website: www.pi.nsw.gov.au
Telephone: 1800 PIC NSW (1800 742 679)
Email: [email protected]
Reception: Level 19, 1 Oxford Street Darlinghurst NSW 2010
Remember too that you can now access the Commission’s portals direct from the ‘Lodge a dispute’ section on the website here
The Commission’s Legal Instruments Published on the Website
The legal instruments that govern the Commission’s operations are now live on the Personal Injury Commission website here. This includes the Legislation, Rules, Procedural Directions, Policies and Delegations.
Please familiarise yourself with these materials as they clearly set out how new applications lodged with the Commission after 1 March 2021 will be managed.
Order Authorising use of the Commission’s Electronic Case Management Systems
Please be aware that an order has been published that authorises the use of the Workers Compensation Division’s Comcase system and the Motor Accidents Division’s Single Dispute Management System as electronic case management systems for proceedings in the Personal Injury Commission.
This order, made under Schedule 1, clause 3 of the Electronic Transactions Act 2000, has been published to the NSW legislation website here.
